Q: How many types of 100G QSFP28 optical modules are there?

A: Currently, there are several types of 100G optical modules in the market, including 100G QSFP28 SR4, 100G QSFP28 PSM4, 100G QSFP28 CWDM4, 100G QSFP28 LR4, 100G QSFP28 ER4, 100G QSFP28 ZR4. For related parameters, refer to the table below.

Q: Can QSFP28 SR4 optical modules operate interchangeably with 100G SR10 optical modules?

A: No. The 100G QSFP28 SR4 optical module has only 4 transmit and receive channels, insufficient to support the 10 channels required for 100G SR10 transmission. QSFP28 SR4 supports either 4x10G or 4x25G transmission and cannot interoperate with 100G SR10 optical modules.

Q: Are QSFP28 and QSFP+ optical modules compatible?

A: QSFP28 optical modules cannot be used in QSFP+ ports. Similarly, SFP+ optical modules cannot operate in SFP ports, and QSFP28 optical modules cannot be used in QSFP+ ports. The compatibility of mixed-speed optical modules in switches depends on the fiber type and port shape compatibility. The port of the optical module must match the port of the switch, and the switch port speed must be equal to or greater than the optical module speed to ensure normal network transmission. QSFP28 ports can use QSFP+ optical modules, but QSFP28 optical modules cannot perform 100Gbps data transmission on QSFP+ ports.

Q: Can 100G optical modules connect with 25G optical modules?

A: Yes, but only MPO interface 100G optical modules (SR4, eSR4, PSM4) can connect with 25G optical modules. However, MPO-LC breakout cables are required to connect 100G optical modules with 25G optical modules. Multi-mode 100G SR4/eSR4 optical modules can connect with multi-mode 25G SR optical modules, and single-mode 100G PSM4 can connect with 25G LR optical modules.
