How to Integrate 40G-100G Optical Modules and 10G Active Optical Cables in Data Center Optical Networks

In recent years, China has clearly decided to speed up the construction of 5G networks, data centers and other new infrastructure, and 5G data centers have been built in various places. In this article, ETU-Link will introduce the application of 40G QSFP, 100G QSFP28 optical module and 10G SFP+ active optical cablein data center optical network.

How to Integrate 40G-100G Optical Modules and 10G Active Optical Cables in Data Center Optical Networks

The network architecture of data center can be divided into core layer, aggregation layer, access layer and server group. The wiring scheme of access layer can adopt TOR wiring. We place 10G server in the standard 42U server cabinet, and then place a 10G access layer switch on the top of the cabinet

Before connecting a server to a switch, insert a 10 GBIT/s NIC into the PIC-E bus port of the server, and then connect the 10 GBIT/s NIC to the 10 Gbit/s switch using a 10 GBIT/s SFP+ active optical cable

This section describes how to connect the server to the switch at the access layer. Generally, the server and the switch at the access layer are close to each other. Therefore, a cable is required.

The connection from the access layer to the aggregation layer can be connected by 40G QSFP+ SR4optical modules and MPO multi-mode optical jumpers, and the connection from the aggregation layer to the core layer can be connected by 100G QSFP28 SR4/LR4 optical modulesand MPO multi-mode /LC single-mode optical jumpers.

Currently, optical modules in cloud data centers have high speed, high density, and low power. The core of high density is to increase the transmission capacity of switch and server boards, essentially to meet the demand of high-speed traffic growth.

In addition, a higher density means fewer switches can be deployed to save equipment room resources. Low power consumption is to save energy consumption. Data centers consume a lot of power. If each module reduces its power consumption, the entire data center can reduce its power consumption. ETU-link can provide comprehensive optical module solutions for data centers.
